Geographical Boundaries:
The Downtown London Core is bound by Oxford Street (North), Adelaide Street (East), Dundas Street (South) and the Thames River (West).
Mel's Insights:
My experience of the Downtown Core in the late 70s and 80s was cruising in cars with boys up and down the main strip, which, at that time was Dundas Street. Fast forward a few years and the boys are still cruising Downtown London, but the main drag is now Richmond Street, or Richmond Row as they call it.
Because of it's proximity to Western University, the Downtown Core is influenced largely by the student populace, which swells in population and activity in the month of September when the kids head back to school.
But don't be fooled, it's not all about the frats and sororities. Downtown is a vibrant mix of parks, businesses, condos and homes. During the Summer months, Victoria Park and Harris Park are home to a different festival every weekend. Rock the Park, Sunfest, RibFest, Kid's Expo means there's something for everyone, and if you're living in the neighbourhood, you know one thing is for sure: things are going to get loud!
With a number of condo buildings recently completed and more slated for the future, Downtown London is fast becoming a major metropolis center. This means growth, which includes the SoHo area, will revitalize the Dundas strip (the Old Downtown) as well. While there's a lot of change going on, the old architecture means there will always history in the landscape.
Downtown Hot Spots: The Early Bird (awesome place for breakfast/brunch), Joe Kool's, The Church Key, and Blu Duby...to name a few. There's plenty to do, even if you're just strolling the streets, so if you're looking for a great place to live and play, it might be the neighbourhood for you!
