HURON HEIGHTS

NEIGHBOURHOOD IN NORTH EAST LONDON, ONTARIO

Geographical Boundaries:

The Huron Heights neighbourhood is located in the North East corner of London, Ontario. It is bordered by the Thames River (North), Oxford Street (East), Clarke Road (South) and Briarhill, jetting west at Huron to Barker until Huron, then it follows south on Highbury to Oxford

Mel's Insights:

The Huron Heights neighbourhood is home to Fanshawe College, 3M (think post-it notes and awesome double-sided tape), Stronach Community Recreation Centre, The Robarts School (school for students who are deaf/hard of hearing), Montcalm and John Paul II (two Catholic High Schools).

While Huron Heights is considered to be a middle-to-low income neighbourhood, this is likely skewed by the population of students surrounding Fanshawe College (did somebody say #funshawe?). The neighbourhood is made up of some very different elements: there are many areas of solid, family-oriented homes, Fanshawe student housing, commercial, industrial areas in addition to a few conservation areas.

Fanshawe Conservation Area, which is over 3,000 acres, sits to the east of this neighbourhood allowing for easy access to great cross-country skiing trails in the winter, as well as hiking, canoeing and camping in the warmer months. Fun Fact: I once lived at Fanshawe Camp Grounds with a friend for a full season! I suggest everyone rough it like that once in their lives. #fresh.

There's a strong Vietnamese and Cambodian influence in Huron Heights, which is why the area boasts some of the BEST Asian grocery stores in the city. I, personally, make excellent spring rolls as a result of the friendships I have in this area. I'm a fan of the Huron Heights neighbourhood because of the great people, its close proximity to the London International Airport and its easy access to the 401 via Veteran's Memorial Parkway.
